How to Build Your Professional English Vocabulary with AI
Anglo Studies AI English Challenge — Day 3
You can be excellent at your job and still struggle to explain what you do in English.
Perhaps you know your industry’s technical terminology but find it difficult to participate naturally in meetings. Maybe you can understand your colleagues but struggle to describe a problem, explain a decision, or give a clear progress update.
The solution isn’t simply to memorize more words.
You need vocabulary that connects directly to the situations you encounter at work.
Artificial intelligence can help you identify useful expressions, understand how professionals use them, and practice applying them in context.
Welcome to Day 3 of the Anglo Studies AI English Challenge.
Today’s mission is straightforward: build a Professional English Cheat Sheet you can use in your work today.
You will need approximately 15 minutes and access to an AI assistant.
1. Why professional vocabulary is more than a list of words
Consider the word deadline.
Knowing its meaning is useful, but professional communication often requires you to combine it with other words and expressions.
For example:
- Meet a deadline.
- Extend a deadline.
- Work towards a deadline.
- Miss a deadline.
- Set a realistic deadline.
These combinations are called collocations: words that commonly occur together.
Learning vocabulary through collocations and complete expressions helps you understand how English is actually used. It also gives you language you can retrieve more easily when you need to communicate.
Compare these two approaches:
Approach A: Memorize the word risk.
Approach B: Learn “identify a potential risk,” “assess the risk,” and “mitigate the risk,” together with examples from your work.
The second approach gives you several practical ways to communicate about the same concept.
The goal isn’t to eliminate individual vocabulary study. It’s to connect words to the tasks, situations, and meanings that make them useful.
2. Your 15-minute challenge
Step 1: Define your professional context (2 minutes)
Tell AI what you do and where you use English.
For example:
- A project manager who coordinates international teams.
- A mining engineer who explains operational performance.
- A finance professional who presents financial results.
- A teacher who communicates with international colleagues.
- An entrepreneur who pitches ideas to potential partners.
You don’t need to provide confidential company information. A general description of your role is enough to get started.
Step 2: Generate your vocabulary toolkit (5 minutes)
Copy this prompt into your preferred AI assistant.
Your Professional English Vocabulary Prompt
Act as my Business English coach.
My profession or main activity is: [your profession].
My English level is: [beginner, intermediate, or advanced].
I most often need English for: [meetings, emails, presentations, negotiations, client conversations, or another situation].
Create a list of 10 practical English expressions or collocations relevant to my work.
For each expression, provide:
- The expression in English.
- A clear definition using language appropriate for my level.
- A natural example related to my profession.
- A situation in which I could use it.
- A common mistake or confusion to avoid, if relevant.
Prioritize useful expressions that professionals can apply in real situations. Avoid obscure terminology and invented claims about what every professional in my industry says.
If my profession is broad, ask me which part of my work I want to focus on.
After creating the list, ask me three questions that require me to use the expressions in my own sentences.
Step 3: Personalize the results (4 minutes)
Don’t accept the first list automatically.
Review the expressions and ask yourself:
- Would I use this in a meeting, email, or conversation?
- Is this appropriate for my English level?
- Does the example reflect something I actually do?
- Do I understand the expression well enough to use it myself?
Ask AI to replace any expressions that are too technical, too basic, or irrelevant to your work.
If an expression is industry-specific, verify it when precision matters. AI-generated vocabulary examples can be plausible without being the preferred terminology in every workplace.
Step 4: Put three expressions to work (4 minutes)
Choose three expressions from your list.
Write one sentence for each that describes a real or realistic situation in your work.
For example, a project manager might write:
- “We need to meet the deadline for the next project milestone.”
- “I’ll provide a progress update at tomorrow’s meeting.”
- “We should address this potential risk before it affects the schedule.”
Then say your sentences aloud or use them in a relevant professional message.
Your goal is to move from recognizing an expression to producing it independently.

3. Examples from different professions
Here are some starting points you can adapt to your own role.
Project management
Track progress — Monitor how work is developing.
Example: “We track progress against the project milestones.”
Meet a deadline — Complete something by the required time.
Example: “The team is working to meet the deadline.”
Address a risk — Take action to deal with a potential problem.
Example: “We need to address this risk before the next phase.”
Finance
Review financial statements — Examine reports about a company’s financial position and performance.
Example: “We review the financial statements before preparing the quarterly report.”
Manage cash flow — Monitor and manage money entering and leaving a business.
Example: “The team is reviewing ways to manage cash flow more effectively.”
Assess financial performance — Evaluate financial results.
Example: “We assess financial performance against the annual targets.”
Marketing
Generate qualified leads — Attract potential customers who meet relevant criteria.
Example: “Our campaign aims to generate qualified leads.”
Track campaign performance — Monitor the results of a marketing campaign.
Example: “We track campaign performance to identify what is working.”
Improve conversion rates — Increase the proportion of people who complete a desired action.
Example: “We’re testing a new landing page to improve conversion rates.”
Engineering and operations
Resolve a technical issue — Find and implement a solution to a technical problem.
Example: “The engineering team is working to resolve the technical issue.”
Monitor operational performance — Observe how processes or systems are performing.
Example: “We monitor operational performance against established indicators.”
Identify the root cause — Determine the underlying reason for a problem.
Example: “We need to identify the root cause before implementing a solution.”
These are illustrative examples, not a universal glossary. Your specific role, sector, and level of technical responsibility will determine which expressions are most relevant.
4. Turn your cheat sheet into a learning system
A list of 10 expressions is a useful start, but its value depends on whether you can use those expressions when needed.
Keep your cheat sheet somewhere accessible. A document, digital note, or personal vocabulary file is sufficient.
For each expression, record:
- The expression.
- Its meaning.
- An example from your own work.
- A date or situation when you used it successfully.
Then return to the list periodically and try to produce the expressions without looking at the answers.
You can also ask your AI coach to simulate a meeting, ask you questions about a work project, or help you explain a professional decision using your new vocabulary.
The key is to use the same expressions in different contexts, rather than continually generating new lists.
5. Your Day 3 checklist
Before finishing today’s challenge, make sure you have:
- Generated 10 expressions relevant to your profession.
- Reviewed their meanings and examples.
- Selected three expressions worth learning.
- Created three original sentences.
- Used at least one expression in a real or realistic professional situation.
Your practical output: one Professional English Cheat Sheet that you can keep, expand, and reuse.

6. Why this approach works with AI
AI can reduce the effort required to create personalized examples and practice materials. Instead of searching for generic vocabulary lists, you can start with your role and the situations you encounter.
But personalization alone doesn’t guarantee learning.
To get more value from the exercise, produce your own sentences, retrieve expressions from memory, compare alternatives, and revisit the vocabulary over time.
AI provides practice opportunities. You still need to decide what is relevant, evaluate the language, and use it.
This is the principle behind the Anglo Studies AI English Challenge: combine AI assistance with active language use and an immediate, practical outcome.
Tomorrow: Prepare for Your Next Meeting with AI
On Day 4, we’ll use AI to prepare for a real meeting.
You’ll create a short meeting preparation sheet with useful questions, ways to express your opinion, and phrases for clarifying information or disagreeing professionally.
Seven days. Seven useful outputs. English you can use.
Anglo Studies — Learn it. Use it. Improve it.
